Some of you might think I'm crazy for attempting to read a book called Jessie Hearts NYC and expecting it to be anything more than annoying, but my trail of thought was along the lines of "well, I would normally be put off by a book called Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging and if that's anything to go by this could be awesomely funny".
Actually no. We are straight away introduced to two characters that would make anyone hate teenage girls (even other teenage girls). They talk in stupid cliches and make unnecessary exclamations of excitement. The books opens when they are taking off on the plane to go to New York and their conversation is something like:
"O.M.G. can you actually believe we're really going to New York?!?! As in, the New York. Blah, blah... shopping... blah, blah... cute boys..."
and again when the plane lands at JFK:
"Whatshername, we're really here. In New York. We. Are. In. New. York. AHHHH!!!! SQUEEEEE!!!!"
I'm not usually a violent person but I had the sudden urge to grab a sledgehammer and end their annoying little fictional lives on page 2 of the novel. It was baaaaaad. Plus, it wasn't funny. Not one bit. Did the author intend it to be funny? It's not as if it read like a bad joke... it read like it was serious. Yeah, it read like the characters we're actually meant to be taken literally.
As for New York, I've never been but it's one of the many places I've always wanted to go. Unfortunately this book was extreme New York overkill, it was a bright twinkling Times Square headache. Like having a food you enjoy rammed down your throat until you're so sick of it you'll never eat it again. The author loves New York, the characters love New York, WE ALL LOVE NEW YORK!!! Someone just shoot me.

My mum always claimed that when she lived in America for a year, my dad wrote to her every day and, in one of his letters, proposed. My dad denied this. But when she got home they got married anyway. In 1966 they emigrated to Canada. They'd wanted to go to New Zealand, but it was full.
I was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba, which, by all accounts, is very cold. And also hot. But when I was four months old, my parents moved back to the UK.
When I was 18 I moved to London and, a few years later - after meeting and falling in love with a fellow northerner - moved back "up north". Now we live in Lancashire (which is lovely, particularly when it's not raining. Which is about two weeks a year) with our two ridiculously gorgeous sons and a pug. Okay, we haven't got a pug, but maybe if I write it here it will come true. If you write it, pugs will come.
I've been writing stories for as long as I can remember (I spent much of my teen years writing stories about George Michael falling in love with me so I've obviously always had a good imagination), but I didn't write a novel until 2004 when I took part in National Novel Writing Month. I haven't quite finished that one yet (!), but I have finished a few others.
I now write full time and I think it's probably the best job in the world. Although if George Clooney is ever looking for an underpant-wrangler, I'll probably apply.
